Measuring Productivity Change without Neoclassical Assumptions: A Conceptual Analysis
نویسنده
چکیده
The measurement of productivity change (or difference) is usually based on models that make use of strong assumptions such as competitive behaviour and constant returns to scale. This survey discusses the basics of productivity measurement and shows that one can dispense with most if not all the usual, neoclassical assumptions. By virtue of its structural features, the measurement model is applicable to individual establishments and aggregates such as industries, sectors, or economies. ∗ The views expressed in this paper are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect any policy of Statistics Netherlands. Preliminary versions were presented at seminars at the universities of Duisburg-Essen (13 December 2006) and Verona (19 March 2007), and at the Sixth Annual Ottawa Productivity Workshop (14-15 May 2007). Further presentations were given at the Australian Bureau of Statistics (22 June 2007), The University of New South Wales (29 June 2007), and The University of Queensland (17 July 2007).

Eco-efficiency and eco-productivity change over time in a multisectoral economic system
In the literature two approaches of productivity analyses can be found, namely the neoclassical approach and the frontier approach. Neoclassical analysis weights inputs by value shares, a procedure that requires data on factor input shares or prices. This approach imputes productivity growth to factors, but cannot distinguish a movement towards the efficiency frontier and a movement of the latt...
متن کاملA Conceptual Analysis of Epistemological Pre-assumptions of Floridi’s Theory of Information Ethics
Background and Aim: This paper aims at conceptual analysis of epistemological pre-assumptions of the theory of “Information Ethics” to provide better understanding about this macro-ethics theory and offer a critical standpoint about some of its pre-assumptions. Methods: A documentary method and a conceptual analysis were used. This research method and approach is best suited to explore pre-assu...
متن کاملPerformance evaluation of efficiency change and productivity growth in Supply Chain Management
The performance of a supply chain can be evaluated in either a cross-sectional or a time series manner, and data envelopment analysis is a useful method for both types of evaluation. In this paper we develop an index and indicator of productivity change that can be used with radial and non-radial models for supply chain malmquist index. The supply chain malmquist productivity index (SCMPI) can ...
متن کاملNeoclassical Growth Accounting and Frontier Analysis: A Synthesis
The standard measure of productivity growth is the Solow residual. Its evaluation requires data on factor input shares or prices. Since these prices are presumed to match factor productivities, the standard procedure amounts to accepting at face value what is supposed to be measured. In this paper we determine total factor productivity growth without recourse to data on factor input prices. Fac...
متن کاملMeasuring Aggregate Productivity Growth Using Plant-level Data
We define aggregate productivity growth as the change in aggregate final demand minus the change in the aggregate cost of primary inputs. We show how to aggregate plant-level data to this measure and how to use plant-level data to decompose our measure into technical efficiency and reallocation components. This requires us to confront the “non-neoclassical” features that impact plant-level data...
